Zoe Aldcroft has been appointed England Women’s national team captain for 2025, replacing Marlie Packer.
Gloucester-Hartpury forward Aldcroft, who has 58 international caps, will lead the Red Roses in the upcoming Guinness Women’s Six Nations and this summer’s home Rugby World Cup starting in August.
The 28-year-old has previously captained the national team on several occasions, including taking on the role in their first-ever 89-0 win over the United States in November 2021.
Manager John Mitchell said: “Zoe is a phenomenal rugby player who consistently achieves high standards at Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR) and international level.
“She leads by example through her world-class actions on and off the field and is an integral member of our leadership group.
“The values required to be a high-performing Red Rose are deeply ingrained in her character and she is highly respected within the team. We believe Zoe will excel in the role.”
vice captain
Former captain Packer, 35, and Leicester center Megan Jones, 28, will serve as vice-captains to Aldcroft, the 2021 World Rugby Women’s Player of the Year.
“Marlie is an incredible person and inspirational leader who has made invaluable contributions to our culture and leadership,” Mitchell added.
“As with many positions, there is fierce competition for a back row spot and the focus must be on Marlie’s ability to make big plays on the pitch.
“Making these decisions is never easy, but I believe it will allow us to do our best and ultimately benefit the Red Roses.”
Aldcroft recently captained England to comprehensive wins over Wales and Scotland during the 2024 Six Nations.
“It’s a real honor to take on the role of captain of the Red Roses,” said Aldcroft, who led Gloucester-Hartpury to the last two Premiership women’s rugby titles.
“I am honored to have been trusted by John Mitchell and the coaching staff.
“It means a lot to me to be able to follow in Marlie’s footsteps. I am very grateful for the knowledge and advice she has shared with me over the years and I know I will have great support from her, Meg and our entire leadership group.”
marley packer
Saracens flanker Packer has had a fruitful time as England captain, winning two Six Nations grand slams and being named the 2023 World Rugby Women’s Player of the Year.
“I have loved every minute of being captain of the Red Roses and have made memories in the role that will last a lifetime,” she said.
“Zoe is a fantastic leader who deserves this opportunity. She has my full support and I will do my best to enable her.”
