Veteran San Diego Padres right-hander Yu Darvish had another dominant performance in his team’s 9-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday night.
Darvish allowed 2 hits, no runs, 1 walk, and 9 strikeouts in 7 innings. Through this effort, the season ERA was lowered to 2.08. The 37-year-old has been performing well recently, going 25 consecutive scoreless innings. As Elias pointed out, this marks Darvish’s longest scoreless innings streak among Japanese-born pitchers.
He hasn’t allowed a run since April 14 against the Dodgers. Sarah Langs added:
As is Darvish’s custom, he embarrassed one of the best lineups in baseball by mixing and matching an impossible eight pitches, relying mostly on a slider-fastball combo. A deep pitch mix and maintaining his speed have allowed him to continue to improve even as he approaches age 40.
Darvish made history again with his victory on Sunday. Darvish currently has 107 wins in MLB, following 93 wins in the NPB, Japan’s top league, before his leap. The 200 combined wins put Darvish in an elite group.
Given Darvish’s outstanding performance so far in 2024, he is expected to continue to increase that mark.
With the win, Darvish’s Padres improved their season batting average back to .500 at 24-24. They currently occupy the third wild card position in the National League.
