Mumbai’s Ayush Mhatre on Tuesday created a world record for becoming the youngest person to score 150-plus runs in List A cricket during a Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Nagaland, bettering the effort of compatriot Yashasvi Jaiswal. Matre, aged 17 years and 168 days, broke the previous record of India batsman Jaiswal (17 years and 291 days), which was set by Mumbai at 17 years and 291 days while playing for Mumbai in a match against Jharkhand in 2019. Earlier this season, he hit 11 sixes and 15 fours to score 181 off 117 balls to give his side a boost. An impressive 403 for 7 in 50 overs.
Mhatre, who hails from Mumbai’s Virar suburb, has been a regular fixture for the domestic heavyweights across formats since joining the squad earlier this season.
He was part of the Iran Cup-winning Mumbai team that beat Rest of India to win the title for the first time in 27 years in October. On his Ranji Trophy debut, Mhatre scored a 71-ball 52 but Mumbai lost their season opener away to Baroda.
With the defending champions looking to bounce back after losing the first Ranji match, Mhatre led the attack against Maharashtra with a brilliant 176 off 232 balls, studded with 22 fours and four sixes. Mumbai won the game by 9 wickets.
He had a few quiet appearances against Tripura and Odisha, but picked up his second first-class ton against Services with 116 off 149 balls, 116 fours and three sixes. and represented India in the U-19 Asia Cup.
The right-handed batsman maintained his form by scoring 50 runs (54 not out, 67 not out) against Japan and UAE, but failed to score single digits in the final of the tournament, where India lost to Bangladesh.
After missing out on Mumbai’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title win, Mhatre returned to the top domestic 50-over competition with a knock of 78 in a high-scoring contest against Karnataka.
