The squad selected for the World Cup will reconvene in early September for an intensive skills-based camp as part of the final match of the tournament. India will be looking to win the tournament for the first time after a few shaky experiences under pressure in the past, most notably the 2020 final and the 2022 semi-final defeats against Australia.
In Bhatia’s absence, the team management experimented to find a reliable No. 3. D Hemalatha and Uma Chhetri, who made his Asia Cup debut, were tried in that position. Bhatia last played in a T20I during the tour of Bangladesh in April.
Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar have been regulars in recent years, while Arundhati Reddy is eyeing a regular spot after impressive performances in the domestic season for Kerala and Delhi Capitals in the WPL. Other pacers in the running include Meghna Singh and Titas Sadhu, who are currently on tour in Australia.
The fast bowling group will be tested by former Australian fast bowler Troy Cooley, one of the NCA’s bowling consultants. The group is expected to play a few intrasquad games in September before leaving for the World Cup.
