Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has claimed that Chelsea are still missing a true defensive midfielder in the centre, something we also discussed here recently.
We have a lot of central midfielders but no professional midfield destroyers. Moises Caicedo is the closest thing we have to a player who can make tackles, break up plays and make interceptions. But he is also more than that, and we saw the benefit of Romeo Lavia when he started with him, allowing him to play much more freely and more advancedly. This is where you can get the most out of him.
So, is the answer for Chelsea to bring in a new defensive midfielder? Gallas believes so.
Gallas said this week: “The problem is that Chelsea need a defensive midfielder to help Moise Caicedo more. You can create a balanced team with 70% defense and 30% attack. “I don’t think Enzo Fernández can play that role because he has different qualities,” he said.
Enzo can’t do it. The same goes for Lavia. As I said, Caicedo is the best we have for that role. But would that role suit Enzo Maresca’s style of play? Using two deeper central midfielders seems to be much more effective.
I’ve been thinking for a few weeks that this team needs to add a defensive midfielder, but I’m not entirely convinced as I think a good double pivot could work and be effective. But overall our defense is still not good enough and as I said yesterday we still lack the spine. Would you include a defensive midfielder in that spine? Please let us know in the comments.
Obviously we all know there are much more pressing priorities for this team right now. Mainly goalkeepers, centre-backs and I am a striker.
I always think more about defensive midfielders than most. Probably because that’s the position I play too! I believe that the best defensive midfielder can literally win a game on his own and is just as important as a goalscorer or creator.
Does the double pivot of Labia and Caicedo provide enough defensive stability in midfield? That’s the problem.
