“Please consider donating and sharing to help them rebuild,” she wrote.
The post was about her in-laws, Griff and Kit Goldsmith. They are expecting their first child in a few weeks, and Griff’s entire livelihood was lost in the flames.
But when followers found out that someone as famous as Mandy Moore had shared a GoFundMe link to raise $60,000 for her relative, some of the responses were downright hostile.
“You have the audacity to call multi-millionaires asking everyday people who earn their paychecks to donate their paychecks to their families,” one commenter said. “When you can easily donate the entire goal amount without affecting your family financially in any way.”
In addition to the Instagram post no longer being published, Moore also wrote a reply.
She defended herself on Instagram
“People who question whether we are helping families or donating random amounts of money that someone has on Google are not helpful or empathetic. Of course I do,” she wrote in the comments.
Mandy Moore added: “Our friend Matt started funding me and people were asking how they could help so I shared it. We also lost most of our lives in the fire. FOFF please. “No one forces you to do anything.”
Notably, GoFundMe raised more than $200,000 before donations closed. Presumably some of it came from Moore’s fans.
