Despite online criticism, Chaplin Roan appears to be keeping quiet about his political stance.
The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer openly discussed her sexuality, mental health and sudden rise to fame in an interview with The Guardian, but she remained fair on one topic: politics.
Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign used the song “Femininomenon” from Chappell’s album, The Rise and Fall of the Midwest PrincessShe explained why she will not be endorsing any of the 2024 presidential candidates.
“I have a lot of problems with our government on all fronts,” Chempel told the publication.
Let’s talk about everything about the 2024 election
“There are so many things I want to change, so I don’t feel pressured to support anyone.”
The 26-year-old singer-songwriter criticized both major political parties, urging people to do their research and make informed decisions. “There are issues on both sides. I encourage people to use their critical thinking skills, vote. Vote small, vote for what’s going on in your city.”
Chappell, who is very active in LGBTQ+ rights and supports organizations like For The Gworls, The GLO Center, and The Trevor Project, was specific about what changes she would like to see. “Trans rights. They can’t let cis people make decisions for trans people,” she said.
But fans have had mixed reactions to Chappell’s comments about whether he would support Harris or her political opponent, former President Donald Trump.
To be fair, Chappell has been consistent in her political stance. During her 2024 Governors Ball set, Chappell announced that she would decline an invitation to perform at the White House for Pride Month, dedicating her performance of “My Kink Is Karma” to President Joe Biden’s administration. “We want freedom, justice, and liberty for all people,” she said. “When you do that, I’ll be there.”
In my opinion, Chappelle’s lack of specific endorsement of a candidate should not be overlooked as to the visibility and progressive actions she takes to advocate for LGBTQ+ people. More importantly, which is better: using one Instagram post/TikTok video or using her entire song catalog and celebrity persona to advocate for social issues?
Ask yourself: Should we continue to support Chaplin Roan’s comments, or should we take her comments into consideration to ensure that all candidates properly consider LGBTQ+ and transgender rights?
