Johan van Graan’s side went down 15-3 midway through the first half after Beno Obano was sent off and Saints scored tries off two wingers, Tommy Freeman and Ollie Sleightholme. After being the league’s top scorer, the latter rallied his grubbers and recorded a stunning effort.
Despite these two significant disadvantages, Bath showed great courage to fight back and were ahead 21-18 with five minutes remaining thanks to tries from Thomas du Toit and Will Muir and a boot from Finn Russell.
George Hendy’s mad run saw him beat several desperate Bath defenders and even put one of his own team-mates over. Before that he found his inside-back Alex Mitchell diving in from close range to bring Northampton back.
George Furbank, who moved up to 10 after Fin Smith’s injury, netted an easy conversion to make it 25-21 for Phil Dowson’s side with just five minutes remaining in the season.
But once again it came down to a scrum and this time Northampton received the decisive call after Christophe Ridley awarded Bath a penalty for taking a knee to relieve pressure on the 22.
Bath came back but Cam Redpath’s offload went straight home. They were still hopeful with a final attacking scrum, a penalty advantage duly awarded and Matt Gallagher putting everything on the line to kick a corner.
A maul was stopped short and Bath should have taken their chance on the arm, but the ball eventually ripped through and Saints survived an epic finish.
