Former England Rugby Union international Tom Boyce has reportedly died after his car was swept away while trying to cross a shoal.
Northumbria Police believe the 43-year-old’s car was swept away by the current after he attempted to cross the River Aln near Alnwick, Northumberland.
Police launched a search for the former England wing on Sunday morning after receiving reports he had not returned home after an evening out with friends.
Police later recovered the car, but Boyce, who has been missing since Saturday, has not yet been found.
A police spokesman said: “It is currently suspected that Tom attempted to cross Aberwick Ford in his car, which was dragged by the current of the river.”

Where does Tom Boyce come from?
Tom Voyce was born in Truro, Cornwall, and educated at Penair School, Truro.
Voyce continued his education at King’s College, Taunton.
Outside of rugby, he is also an ambassador for children’s charity the Wooden Spoon Society.

Tom Voyce helped Wasps win their third successive Premiership title by scoring a try in the 2005 Premiership final.

After success at Wasps, Voyce joined Gloucester where he spent three years.
Tom Voyce began his playing career with Bath Rugby, progressing through the lower flank before making his debut for the Premiership side.
During his time at Bath, he became an established member of the England Under-21 team, making his debut for England against the United States in 2001. This was the first of nine games.
After making 55 appearances for Bath in 2003, Voyce went on to join London Wasps, where he played the majority of his senior club rugby.
During the 2004 season, he set the record for the fastest attempt against Harlequins when he collected a loose ball from a kick-off and scored across the post in 9.63 seconds.
He also scored a try in the 2005 Premiership Rugby Final, helping Wasps secure the title for the third successive year.
It was here that he became an established member of the England team, being selected for each of England’s Six Nations matches during the 2006 tournament.
Boyce came off the bench in England’s opening match and scored before appearing in the second match.
He made a further start for England in the 2006 Six Nations, this time against Ireland, as England floundered throughout the tournament.
His last England cap came against Australia in Sydney, a match in which he admitted he played quite poorly, and Boyce’s international career ended with nine appearances and 15 goals.
In March 2009, it was announced that Boyce had joined Gloucester, where he would spend three years.
The final stop of his career was London Welsh, whom he joined in April 2012, and Voyce announced his retirement from all forms of rugby in May 2013.
