Numbers shared for election night and subsequent dates have not yet been verified. The certification process can take several days or weeks, depending on your state.
First, votes are verified to ensure that all valid votes have been counted. This step includes adjusting the number of mail-in, early, overseas and Election Day ballots cast to match the number of registered voters. This process is also called canvassing. Many states also conduct post-election audits to ensure that voting equipment used during the election counted votes correctly. Very tight races may require a recount, which could prolong the process.
Finally, once those steps are complete, your vote is verified. Each state has different deadlines for election officials to issue a written statement certifying the validity of the results.
Electors then gather in each state’s capital city in mid-December to cast their states’ electoral votes for president and vice president. This year it is set for Tuesday, December 17th.
Ballots will be sent to the Senate President and Recorder and counted in the Assembly on January 6.
