Many great games have suffered from poor marketing. Sometimes they’re advertised to completely the wrong demographic. Other times, we partner with uncool or problematic brands. Most of the time it’s hard to explain and requires experience to really understand, so unless you get a fair number of people to try the demo, you’re going to have a hard time. Coincidentally, this is why our much-maligned profession remains valuable to consumers in the YouTube age. At least that’s what I tell myself at night when existential dread sets in.
But sometimes, there are good games that are crippled by bad first impressions. It may be a pre-rendered reveal trailer that doesn’t contain any actual footage or assets from the game in question and doesn’t even work as a tone piece. The recently released trailer for Dragon Age: Veilgarde, which inspired the theme of this episode, seemed to be one of them. In fact, some people initially wondered if it was some kind of Fortnite tie-in, considering how far it felt from the Dragon Age they knew. However, a 20-minute proper gameplay reveal the next day thankfully allayed many people’s concerns. phew.
So what did our esteemed panel come up with? A good game with some trash releases trailer? Find out in the latest edition of The Best Games Ever Podcast, conveniently available on this webpage or in the app you’re reading this on.
