West Ham United have announced the signing of young Brazilian winger Luis Guillerme from Palmeiras on a five-year contract.
The 18-year-old completed his move on Friday, June 14, when the summer transfer window officially opened.
He is considered one of the most exciting prospects in South American football and has already made 40 senior appearances for Palmeiras, won the Brazilian Serie A title, played in the Copa Libertadores and featured for the national under-20 side.
A technically gifted attacking player with tremendous speed and acceleration, elusive dribbling ability and a great left foot, Luis Guilherme is a very promising talent who has been identified as a top target by Technical Director Tim Steidten and Head Coach Julen Lopetegui.
The teenager is set to join Lopetegui and his first team squad for pre-season training in early July and is looking forward to showing what he can do for the Clarets and Blue.
“I am very happy to have signed with West Ham United, a club that believes in my work,” said Louis Guillerme. “I would also like to thank everyone at West Ham, especially Tim and his team who came to Brazil and spoke to me as well as my family.
“They presented the project and my family and I loved it. So I am very happy to sign for this club and I want to contribute as much as possible. If all goes well, we will have a beautiful journey ahead.
“The director and I have already had a conversation. He showed me his project and I believe I will learn a lot from him. He coached for the Spanish national team and also managed big clubs.
“The Premier League is the best league in the world. I believe I will make a lot of progress here with the whole West Ham staff, which is very important for my development.
“When I was young, I watched English soccer whenever I had the chance. It’s an amazing feeling to see what it’s like and now being able to play here.
“I’ve had this dream since I was 11, and now it’s becoming a reality. I am very happy about it and grateful to West Ham. let’s go!”
“Lewis is still very young, but there is no doubt that he is ready to make an impact here in the first team. He is coming to a great environment with other exciting young players and good people who will support him every step of the way.
“We will look after him, help him and his family adjust and give them time to adjust. However, we are very excited about his immediate potential and look forward to the progress he can make at West Ham United.
“This is a very important contract for us. We have worked hard, working closely with the board across the club, to secure Lewis’s signature. We know how tough the Premier League is and we want to have a competitive squad for next season, but we also want to find a balance in planning for the long-term future. Exciting young players like Luis Guilherme will help us achieve this goal.”
