Baku, Nov 17 (IPS) – “We cannot rely on capitalist logic for our struggle for liberation. We will not build houses after floods because further investment is unprofitable. Corporations will respond to our attacks. It will not overthrow the industrial-agricultural complex that is being completed.”
Hear from the Non-Governmental Radical Youth Coalition and People’s Uprising for Climate Justice Youth, who co-led this youth effort at COP29.
“This is why we are here to fight for the technical details, to prevent the damage that money can cause. We cannot accept more loans and debt. Climate finance is the key to the climate crisis in electricity markets. I cannot ‘financialize’ defect resolution.”
Alab Mirasol Ayroso told IPS that youth action is about the “needs of being young people.” We talked about fossil fuels, phasing out fossil fuels, and more importantly, we talked about bad solutions and militarization. Most talk about recognizing human rights in negotiations where real solutions can be found if we just listen to the people who are actually on the ground.”
Young people from all over the world come together around issues that matter to them. The issues they are talking about are not a priority agenda for COP29 negotiations. They sang, chanted and gave one powerful speech after another about climate change, peace and unity, human and environmental rights, an end to fossil fuels, climate debt and what rich countries and highly polluting countries must pay for.
Hajar, one of Youth Action’s speakers, emphasized that “the richest countries must face their colonial history and make meaningful progress in compensating for the losses and damage caused by the climate crisis.” There is a huge capitalist market in demilitarization and its link to finance. They profit from massacres, killings, and exploitation. But when I ask for money, I always get the same answer. “I don’t have enough money.”
Iroso said young people can see through smokescreens, hypocrisy, doublespeak, lack of commitment to climate change and the youth agenda. , war and genocide. This is why we refuse to look away and remain silent.
“When the fire rises. When the smoke rises. When the people rise. Do you hear our song? The end of fossil fuels. The end of fossil fuels. When the waters rise. When the floods come in. When the people rise. “When will you hear our song? The end of fossil fuels,” they sang.
Youth want direct access for Indigenous peoples, young people, children, workers, women, LGBTQIA and people with disabilities. At COP29, “We pledge to remain united until the last moment. We are in this hall to fight for our rights. Without human rights, there is no climate justice.”
