Nikerk withdraws his name from 400m:
Wayde van Niekerk has decided not to compete in the 400m at the Paris Olympics. According to reports, Van Niekerk has withdrawn from the event to focus on helping South Africa’s 4x400m and 4x100m relay teams reach the podium. The South African Sports Federation and Olympic Committee have confirmed that Van Niekerk’s withdrawal was at the request of Athletics South Africa.
At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Van Niekerk achieved one of the most incredible feats in Olympic history when he broke Michael Johnson’s 400m world record of 43.18 seconds. Running from lane 8, he astonished the world with a stunning time of 43.03 seconds.
He will focus on the 200m race:
The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee have officially announced that Wayde van Niekerk will compete in the 200m at the Paris Olympic Games. He is also included in the pool of potential starters for both the men’s 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.
South Africa has secured two relay spots after winning silver at the 2024 World Relays, with high hopes for the country. Relay qualifying is scheduled to begin on August 8, the same day as the 200m final.
Other South Africans who have qualified for the 200m include Shaun Maswanganyi and Benjamin Richardson, who both won the event ahead of Van Niekerk at the South African Championships. However, Luxolo Adams, another athlete who has qualified for the 200m, may not be able to compete due to injury concerns.
