State funding is set for Thursday. President Biden said he would join several others in giving a eulogy at Thursday’s service. President-elect Donald Trump said he would attend.
Carter lay in state in Atlanta as part of a six-day memorial service. What started on Saturday We worshiped at our childhood home in Plains, Georgia. The Carter Center said Tuesday morning that more than 23,000 people came to pay their respects to the former president.
“This is a man who was a peanut farmer from a small town in southern Georgia who ultimately became president of the United States,” Carter’s grandson, Jason Carter, said at a Plains service last Saturday. “This is a pretty amazing American story.”

On Tuesday, Carter’s body will be transported from Atlanta to Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, where his casket will be taken to a hearse with a funeral service. From there, a motorcade will travel to the U.S. Navy Memorial, where his casket will be ceremonially moved from a hearse to a horse-drawn caisson.
The caisson will be taken to the U.S. Capitol, where Carter’s casket will be carried up the rotunda steps by military body bearers. Members of Congress can pay their respects during the service.

Starting Tuesday afternoon, Carter will lie in state in the Capitol rotunda until Thursday, when the public can pay their respects. His funeral will be held at the National Cathedral on Thursday and his remains will be transported back to Georgia.
A final private service will be held in Plains, where Carter will be buried next to Rosalynn Carter on her family’s peanut farm.
Full schedule of Tuesday’s events (ET):
- 9:30 AM: Public visits are closed.
- 11:30 AM: President Carter holds a retirement ceremony and leaves the Carter Presidential Center for the last time. The family then takes the remains to Dobbins Air Force Reserve Base outside Atlanta.
- 12:10 PM: Arrive at Dobbins Air Reserve Base for the departure ceremony.
- 12:45 PM: The family and President Carter’s remains depart for Washington aboard Special Air Mission 39.
- 2:15 PM: The 39th Special Air Mission Group will arrive at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, where President Carter’s remains will be transferred to a hearse with a ceremony.
- 2:45 PM: The family and President Carter’s remains will be transported in a motorcade to the U.S. Navy Memorial.
- 3:30 PM: The remains are transferred from the hearse to a horse-drawn caisson and paraded to the U.S. Capitol. Military body carriers will carry the casket into the Capitol Rotunda.
- 4:30 PM: Lawmakers will pay their respects during a service in the rotunda.
- 7 PM – Midnight: President Carter will remain stationed while the military maintains an honor guard. The public is invited to pay their respects throughout this time.
