If you’re traveling to the UK early this week, you may need to apply for a travel authorization online before you go.
Starting Wednesday, Britain will require U.S. citizens, Canadian citizens and nationals of more than 36 other countries to obtain a so-called Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).
Here’s what travelers need to know:
What is an Electronic Travel Authorization?
An ETA is a prior authorization for travelers from countries for which the UK does not require a visa.
The UK has launched a program to visit citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in 2024. It applies to several additional countries on Wednesday.
Travelers must go through immigration upon arrival. The United States has similar digital authorization requirements for citizens of European Union countries, the United Kingdom, and other countries that do not require a visa to enter the country. In late 2025, EU countries will require citizens of other countries to have similar standards to U.S. citizens.
If you have a visa and are authorized to live, work or study in the UK, you do not need an ETA.
How can I get it?
You can apply online using the UK’s ETA app. android and iphone. The application costs £10 (about $12.50) and is valid for two years, with visits lasting up to six months. Fees are paid by credit card.
Travelers must upload their passport and a photo of themselves to apply.
How long does it take?
Applicants can wait approximately three days for a decision to be sent via email.
What about children?
Those who qualify for an ETA need one for each person, including infants and children.
What happens if I’m connecting from the UK?
You will also need an ETA if you are traveling to a UK airport on a connecting flight to another country.
