Aerial manipulation has gained interest in completing high-altitude tasks that are difficult for human workers, such as contact inspection and defect detection. In this letter, we address a more general and dynamic task: simultaneous tracking of time-varying contact forces and motion trajectories on a tangent surface. We demonstrate an approach to the aerial calligraphy task using a novel sponge pen design as an end effector.

This paper summarizes the work of the Micro Air Vehicle Laboratory on end-to-end neural control of quadcopters. The biggest challenge in making such controllers a reality is the “reality gap” between the real platform and the training environment. To address this, we combine online identification of the reality gap with pre-trained corrections via deep neural controllers, which is much more efficient than traditional computation of optimal solutions.
