Mexico’s ruling party claims judges in the current court system are corrupt and wants the country’s entire judiciary, made up of about 7,000 judges, to run for election.
Last week, Mexico’s lower house of Congress passed a controversial bill that would begin the most sweeping judicial reform in a century, requiring all judges to run for office.
The bill was introduced in the Senate on Sunday, where lawmakers are expected to debate and vote on it later.
Critics say the constitutional amendment to replace 7,000 judges nationwide would deal a serious blow to the independence of the judiciary, making it more loyal to voters and the ruling party than to the law.
