Ryan Gravenburch’s renaissance shows no signs of slowing down in the second half of 2024!
The Liverpool midfielder has enjoyed a rejuvenation under Arne Slot in recent months and has produced such consistent performances that Alan Shearer has so far named him in the Premier League Team of the Year.
The 22-year-old has gone from just one Netherlands cap in two years to five since the start of September, each as a starter under Ronald Koeman (Transfermarkt).
Gravenberch shines in Dutch victory
Gravenberch produced a moment of magic during the Oranje’s 4-0 win over Hungary on Saturday night, but the result was overshadowed by a medical emergency that saw Hungarian coach Adam Szalai taken to hospital during the game.
As play resumed after the 36-year-old received the necessary treatment, the Liverpool midfielder created an attack for his side by cutely receiving a pass on the half-turn and skipping over one opponent’s challenge as if it was nothing. A wasp passing by.
Gravenberch’s resurrection was a joy to watch
Aside from his eye-catching skills, Gravenberch had another solid performance across the board in the Netherlands’ win, in which Cody Gakpo scored a penalty kick.
According to SofaScore, the 22-year-old completed 64 of 67 passes (96%) and 3 of 4 dribbles (75%), won six duels and executed two key passes.
The midfielder endured an abortive spell at Bayern Munich in 2022/23, making few appearances for the Bundesliga giants before joining Liverpool the following summer, and made just 12 Premier League appearances last season, where he showed some flashes of quality but wasn’t very good. It wasn’t. Really establish yourself.
At Slot, the outlook is very different. Gravenberch is one of only two Reds players (along with Virgil van Dijk) to have performed at the highest level at every minute so far this season (WhoScored).
It has been great to see our number 38 finally flourishing in recent months, and his majestic dribble against Hungary last night showed the confidence that is now surging through his veins.
