Dr. Dietmar Ley, CEO of Basler AG, Arensburg, Germany, has been elected as the new President of the VDMA Robotics + Automation Association. He succeeds Frank Konrad, CEO of Hahn Automation Group GmbH, who recently ended his three-year term as chairman.
Ley has served as CEO of Basler AG since February 2000. He is responsible for the Research and Development, Innovation and Product businesses. After receiving his PhD in computer vision, Ley joined Basler in 1993 and was appointed to Basler’s management team in 1996. Previously, he worked at Philips GmbH, Siemens AG and Alcatel AG.
Ley also covers vision technology topics outside of the company. From 2003 to 2018, he was a member of the Management Board of the Machine Vision Department of VDMA, the largest association of vision technology companies in Germany. Since 2018 he has been a member of the Management Board of the VDMA Robotics and Automation Department.

Konrad was honored for his dedication to the industry at this year’s VDMA Robotics + Automation Member General Meeting and was elected Vice President.

With 3,600 members, VDMA is the largest network organization and an important voice for the machinery and equipment manufacturing industry in Germany and Europe. The Association represents the common economic, technical and scientific interests of this unique and diverse industry.
The VDMA Robotics + Automation Association (VDMA R+A) is the trade association of VDMA with more than 400 member companies, including component and system suppliers in the fields of robotics, integrated assembly solutions and machine vision. The goal of this industry-focused platform is to support robotics and automation through a wide range of activities and services.
According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), Germany had the fourth highest robot density in the world, with 429 robots per 10,000 employees in 2023. Robot density in Germany has increased at a CAGR of 5% since 2018. Robot density is a number that tracks the degree of automation adoption in manufacturing industries around the world.
