Ravi Shastri is probably one of the most outspoken men in world cricket. He is known for not being afraid to speak his mind honestly. The same phenomenon was seen with the publication of Beyond Boundaries, the autobiography of 1983 World Cup winner and BCCI selector and former president Sandeep Patil. During the launch of Sandeep Patil’s book, one of the panelists asked Shastri about an incident that occurred during an international tour when he and Patil were roommates. The panelist asked if it was true that the hotel room service staff was surprised by the amount of food the couple ordered. Shastri said yes.
“We got a lot more today than the Test cricketers (sarcastically speaking). We were a pair who didn’t take home a penny. So when I got home from a Test match, my dad would ask me, You asked, ‘How much does a Test match cost?’ “It would be some loose change because we would eat like pigs,” Ravi Shastri replied.
“What about liquid?” the panelist asked.
“There is never a shortage. We have been thirsty since we were very young. If the match ends at 5.30, the wickets will start at 6.30,” replied Ravi Shastri.
Meanwhile, Sandeep Patil expressed confidence in the Indian cricket team’s ability to replicate their past success against Australia in the upcoming Test series. Looking back on India’s recent performances, Patil emphasized the importance of consistency and the lessons learned from the series against New Zealand.
“India played really well in the last Test series, but the series between India and New Zealand was a wake-up call,” Patil told ANI, emphasizing that the team must remain alert and prepared.
Having played 29 Tests and 45 ODIs for India, Patil has scored 1,588 and 1,005 runs respectively.
He acknowledged the difficulties faced in the New Zealand series but was optimistic about India’s prospects.
“I am confident that the team will replicate the performance of the last tour of Australia as the entire Indian team has shown tremendous consistency,” Patil added, emphasizing his faith in the team’s ability to produce a strong performance on a foreign soil.
