The 2024 Currie Cup is said to be set to get even more action as the decider of rugby’s oldest competition will no longer clash with two local URC derbies on the same day.
According to Network 24The Sharks-Lions match in Durban on September 21 and the North-South clash between DHL Stormers and Vodacom Bulls at Cape Town Stadium are scheduled to take place later in the 2024-25 URC season.
URC had originally scheduled the SA derby to be played on the same day as the Currie Cup final, which meant the kick-off times had to be rearranged.
but, Network 24 It was suggested that to avoid this duplication, the flagship competition of the Curry Cup could be held independently.

If the Bulls or Lions, currently ranked first and second respectively, had advanced to the finals, fans would have been faced with the dilemma of having both the URC and Currie Cup played on the same day.
When I approached Network 24URC spokesman Adam Redmond referred questions to SA Rugby, who referred them back to the URC. The scheduling change mirrors past URC reshuffles, such as last season’s Sharks-Storms fixture, which was pushed back by several months.
The move is seen as a potential win for the Currie Cup, which has been criticised for losing its prestige in recent years as South Africa’s top teams have focused more on the URC and EPCR competitions.
