Ubisoft has pledged to improve the quality of the game Star Wars Outlaws following its disappointing launch.
The company said in an update released Tuesday that it is working to finish the game in time for the holiday shopping season.
After Star Wars Outlaws underperformed at the box office, Ubisoft announced that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will also be delayed until early 2025 and will move away from the traditional season pass model.
The company has revealed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which will be released in February 2025, will mark the return of new releases on Steam from day one.
Ubisoft said that “despite solid reviews (76 on Metacritic) and user scores (3.9/5) on first party and Epic stores that reflect the game’s immersive and authentic Star Wars universe, initial sales of Star Wars Outlaws have been weaker than expected.”
“Based on player feedback, the development team at Ubisoft is working hard to rapidly implement a series of updates to refine and improve the player experience to ensure Star Wars Outlaws remains a strong long-term success, engaging a wide audience over the current holiday season.”
Ubisoft also announced that it plans to release Star Wars Outlaws on Steam on November 21, 2024.
The creative director of Star Wars Outlaws recently said he was a bit disappointed with the game’s critical reception, but that Ubisoft is committed to improving the game.
In an interview with GamesRadar, Ubisoft Massive’s Julian Garrity said he wished the score had been a little higher.
“I was a little disappointed with Metacritic. Of course, the press and critics’ recognition is very important to us, but the players really resonate with what we’ve done,” he said.
He added that there was “pride, happiness and a sense of accomplishment” within the team and that they could show more in the game.
“This is a game that millions of people will play for years, and we will never stop improving it,” he said. “Well, that’s a lie. We will probably stop improving it. But my mind today is not on stopping improving it.”
In their 3/5 Star Wars Outlaws review, VGC called the game “a poorly written Uncharted-style adventure that fails to live up to its potential.”
