U.S. vetoes UN resolution calling for ceasefire in Gaza
The United States says it has vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. This is because the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip was not made a condition of the ceasefire.

We have been clear throughout the negotiations that we cannot support an unconditional ceasefire that fails to release hostages. Because a permanent end to the war must be accompanied by the release of the hostages, as this House has previously demanded. These two urgent goals are inextricably linked. This resolution abandoned that need, and for that reason the United States could not support it. Simply put, this resolution sends a dangerous message to Hamas. There is no need to come back to the negotiating table. There are still seven American citizens in the hands of Hamas. We won’t forget them. We will continue to pursue a diplomatic solution that brings peace, security, and freedom to the Palestinian people in Gaza.
