Former President Trump threatened on Saturday to take legal action against individuals he believes committed fraud in connection with his loss in the 2020 election if he wins the presidency in November, one of his clearest pledges to date.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that the 2020 election was fraudulent and rigged, but there has been no evidence of widespread fraud. He has accused Democrats of “widespread fraud and deception” in 2020 and said the 2024 election will be “under the most rigorous professional oversight.”
Trump posted on Truth Social, “If I win, those who perpetrated the fraud will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, including lengthy prison sentences, to ensure that this type of corruption of justice never happens again.”
He said lawyers, political activists, donors, voters and election officials could all be subject to prosecution.
He added: “Those who engage in immoral conduct will unfortunately be tracked down, arrested and prosecuted at a level that we have never seen before in our country.”
Trump has repeatedly claimed that there was widespread fraud in the 2020 election, which he lost to President Biden. He has challenged the results in court, but those claims have been dismissed for lack of merit or lack of evidence. The Supreme Court has rejected various election challenges.
The former president is facing criminal charges in Georgia for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 state election results and federal charges in Washington, D.C. for allegedly trying to overturn the election results and remain in power.
“Donald Trump has said from day one that he wants to be a dictator. He said he wants to end the Constitution,” Amar Musa, a spokesman for Vice President Harris’s campaign, wrote on X. “Now he’s publicly promised to lock up his political enemies. And now he has a blueprint and a Supreme Court that will allow him to do whatever he wants. Take him seriously.”
