President-elect Trump said it would be “very difficult” to lower food prices because they have risen, but predicted they would come down.
In a wide-ranging interview with TIME, Trump struck a more cautious tone than during the campaign.
But when asked if his presidency would fail if food prices did not fall, Trump responded, “I don’t think so.”
“Look, they lifted him up. I want to take them down. Once things are up, it’s hard to get them down. As you know, it is very difficult. But I think they will. I think that energy will bring them down. “I think a better supply chain will break them,” Trump said. “The supply chain is still broken.”
Trump frequently criticized the Biden administration for high grocery prices during the 2024 campaign, often blaming the campaign trail for huge price increases for bacon, cereal, crackers and other items.
“We’re going to take them down,” Trump told shoppers at a Pennsylvania grocery store in September.
“From the day I take the oath of office, we will rapidly lower prices and make America affordable again,” Trump told voters in a speech in North Carolina last August.
“Prices will go down. Just watch. They will go down, and they will go down fast. It’s the same for everything, not just insurance.”
