Former President Trump said Thursday he would not participate in further debates with Vice President Harris, ending any chance of a second meeting between the two candidates before Election Day.
Trump claimed he won Harris’ debate on Tuesday despite some polls saying otherwise, posting on Truth Social that “when a boxer loses a fight, the first thing out of his mouth is, ‘I want a rematch.'”
The former president claimed that issues like inflation and immigration were discussed in “great detail” during his June debate with Biden and his showdown with Harris on Tuesday night.
“She skipped the Fox debate and refused to appear on NBC and CBS,” Trump posted. “Kamala should focus on what she should have been doing for the last 4 years. There will be no 3rd debate!”
Trump and Harris debated Tuesday, their first meeting since Harris became the Democratic nominee in late July. The vice president repeatedly tried to get under Trump’s skin, often succeeding as the former president veered off on topics like crowd sizes, Biden and a conspiracy theory that immigrants had kidnapped pets in an Ohio town.
Harris’s campaign almost immediately called for a second debate between the two candidates. Trump balked, saying he had no intention of agreeing to another debate.
The former president previously agreed to appear in a FOX News debate in early September and an NBC debate in late September, but Harris’s campaign said the second debate would depend on both candidates appearing at an event hosted by ABC News on Tuesday.
According to a CNN quick poll, 63% of debate watchers said Harris won Tuesday’s debate, compared to just 37% who said Trump won. Several polls released Thursday showed Harris widening her lead over Trump nationally.
Trump cited several social media polls, including one posted by C-SPAN, in his Wednesday morning interview that showed he was doing better than Harris, and a Trump campaign poll showed Trump up two points after the debate, while Harris’s support in key states was flat.
