President-elect Trump on Sunday named Calista Gingrich, the wife of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, as one of his latest nominees for U.S. ambassador.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that he chose Gingrich to be the U.S. ambassador to Switzerland. That’s because Gingrich cited her previous ambassadorial experience during his first administration. Gingrich and the other ambassador nominees must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
“Calista, who is happily married to Newt Gingrich, previously served admirably as Ambassador to the Holy See,” Trump wrote in the post. “During her tenure, Calista worked to promote and defend international religious freedom, combat human trafficking, and provide humanitarian assistance around the world.”
“Calista graduated magna cum laude from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, in 1988 with a Bachelor of Music degree,” the Republican leader added. “congratulation!”

Trump later wrote that he had nominated Mauricio Claver-Carone as U.S. special envoy to Latin America. The envoy position differs from the ambassador role in that it is shorter and typically carries out specific duties.
In his announcement to Claver-Carone, Trump cited “chaos and anarchy” at the U.S. southern border.
“Now is the time to restore order to our hemisphere,” President Trump wrote. “Mauricio knows the region well and knows how to put America’s interests first.”

“He also knows the serious threats we face from illegal mass migration and fentanyl,” he added. “As Special Envoy to the Department of State, Mauricio will work tirelessly to protect the American people.”
In a third post, Trump nominated PayPal co-founder Ken Howery to be the U.S. ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark. Howery previously served as U.S. ambassador to Sweden, and Trump wrote that he “served our people well” in that role.

“As co-founder of PayPal and the venture capital fund Founders Fund, Ken has transformed America’s innovation and technology leadership into a global success story, and his experience will be invaluable in representing us abroad,” President Trump said. “For national security and freedom around the world, the United States believes ownership and control of Greenland is absolutely essential. Thank you Ken. Congratulations!”
