“I knew immediately something was wrong. I heard a buzzing sound, a gunshot, and immediately felt the bullet rip through my skin. I realized what was happening because I was bleeding profusely,” Trump wrote.
Secret Service agents climbed on top of Trump after the shots were fired and immediately pulled him off the stage. The agency confirmed Trump was safe shortly after being taken from the scene.
Secret Service agents “neutralized” the gunman, who is now dead, the agency said. One protester was reported dead, and another was injured in the incident.
In his statement, Trump did not speculate about his attackers or their motives, and offered condolences to the families of the dead, who have not yet been publicly identified.
“I can’t believe this could happen in our country,” Trump said.
The president also praised the Secret Service and law enforcement for their quick response, and concluded his message with his signature exhortation in capital letters: “God Bless America!”
