WASHINGTON — Kamala Harris may have charmed Democrats and political analysts alike with her acceptance speech for her party’s presidential nomination on Thursday, but there were a few too many “thank yous” for her opponent, Donald Trump.
“She said thank you about 50 times. Did you see the beginning? Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you, thank you, ahhhhhhh, thank you, thank you, thank you. I asked her what the hell was wrong with her,” the former coup attempt president said Friday, his first campaign stop since the Democratic National Convention the night before.
In fact, before a sold-out crowd at Chicago’s United Center, Harris gave a three-minute standing ovation, repeating “thank you” several times, something Trump must have noticed as he watched.
Trump’s analysis of the issue in Las Vegas on Friday expanded on one of his first “fact-check” social media posts he made while the speech was underway: “Too many “thank yous”, too soon, what’s going on with her?”
Other posts in that thread included, “Where’s Hunter?”, “She led us to failed state status!”, and “There is no future under Comrade Kamala Harris because she will lead us into nuclear World War III! She will never be respected by the world’s tyrants!”
When Harris mentioned in her speech that Trump was convicted criminally of falsifying business records and that a civil jury found him guilty of sexual abuse, Trump responded, “Is she talking about me?”
Harris’s 40-minute speech was widely praised as well-crafted and powerfully delivered, capping a whirlwind month that began with President Joe Biden wrapping up his reelection campaign and endorsing Harris as his vice president.
Harris won the nomination within days by securing the support of party delegates, and her party nearly unanimously praised her at its four-day convention in Chicago while disparaging Trump as a potential dictator and criminal.
Trump, notorious for his lack of interest in policy detail and outright dishonesty, complained that Harris did not provide enough specifics in her speech and was not telling the truth.
“In her speech last night, she told 26 lies. She lied, but that’s okay because a lot of people lie. They’ll do anything to get elected,” he said.
President Trump spoke Friday afternoon at a Mexican restaurant inside a Las Vegas hotel and casino owned by Miriam Adelson, one of his campaign’s biggest supporters and the widow of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson.
While he spent much of his time there repeating his usual lies about his record and unsubstantiated claims about what a Harris presidency would mean — he warned again of a 1929-style depression, claiming it would happen if Hillary Clinton won in 2016 and if Biden won in 2020 — he tried to make a new case for his stance on abortion. “I’m very strong on women’s reproductive rights,” he said.
In fact, Trump gave the anti-abortion Federalist Society carte blanche to pick hundreds of federal judgeships, including three on the U.S. Supreme Court. Trump frequently boasted that these appointments helped overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.
