Well, he didn’t try to control the crowd as much as he tried to control the message about people leaving the event early.
For Trump, rally size matters. During the September 10 presidential debate, Trump was perturbed when Democratic rival Kamala Harris bluntly said, “People are starting to leave rallies early because of fatigue and boredom.”
In Walker, Trump attempted to explain why rally attendees appeared to be leaving his event.
“Do you see people leaving? Because no one leaves.” The former president said. “And if that happens, we’ll finish it quickly.”
Trump went on to claim that his aides were responsible for the apparent departure, and that people actually lined up at the back to take photos because he couldn’t have done so earlier.
“Sometimes these idiots with me say, ‘Come back,’” Trump said. “30 people get up and leave. And because I couldn’t take pictures before, everyone was waiting in line behind me until I could take pictures.”
But Trump’s account of people leaving the rally was not helped by the Harris campaign, which reportedly shared a video (check notes) of people leaving the rally.
Naturally, social media users mocked the former president’s questionable claims.
