Former President Trump said Sunday that his weeks-long admissions trial in New York City and Thursday’s guilty verdict had been “very difficult” for his wife, Melania, as she testified about his alleged affair.
President Trump was found guilty Thursday of 34 felonies for falsifying business documents, the first time a former president has been convicted of a crime. He appealed the ruling.
The charges relate to hush money payments made weeks before the 2016 election to cover up allegations of a past affair between Trump and an adult film star, which the president has denied.
The alleged affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels occurred in 2006, just a year after Trump married Melania Trump and a few months after the birth of his son, Barron.
“She’s fine, but I think it’s very difficult for her,” Trump said in an interview on “Fox & Friends.” “In many ways, it’s harder on them (his family) than it is on me.” ”
“I have a wonderful wife who needs to hear these things all the time. They do it for this reason. They do that, and all these obscene names they give these people, I’m not even allowed to defend myself because of the gag order. “Think about it.” President Trump spoke without specifying who “they” were.
“But they put these things in to create confusion. “They are bad people,” he said. “I know everything they do. I know every move they make. all right.”
Trump later said in an interview that he was “okay” with the possibility of going to jail. He could face up to four years in prison on the charges, but this is considered unlikely. His sentencing is scheduled for July 11.
