Tottenham Hotspur manager Anger Postecoglou has confirmed that midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur suffered a concussion during the side’s Carabao Cup semi-final win over Liverpool on Wednesday.
Bentancur collapsed on the pitch six minutes into the game and was taken off on a stretcher eight minutes later. Afterwards, he was immediately taken to the hospital and underwent examination.
The Uruguay international (27 years old) was trying to head a ball that swerved from a corner when the incident occurred.
“Thankfully, it’s good news. He’s obviously been in the hospital and they’ve done all the tests in terms of making sure everything’s okay. And yes, everything’s good. He’s back home and he’s okay, he feels good,” Postecoglou said in a video posted. X’s Spurs.
“We’ll definitely be following the protocols. We’ll have to wait a few weeks to see if everything’s okay. But fortunately, it looks like a concussion but nothing more than that.”
The Australian coach praised his players for the way they handled the incident.
“It was distressing, especially seeing Pedro (the prisoner), who was there for the first time and knew it was a distressing situation,” he said. “But I thought the players handled it well, the medical team handled it well, and thankfully everything went well.”
Spurs will field James Maddison and Fape Matar Sarr in their FA Cup third round tie at Tamworth on Sunday. Tamworth plays in the National League, the fifth tier of English football.
The facilities at Tamworth’s home stadium, The Lamb Ground, are a far cry from what his players are used to, but Postekoglo said his side would not suffer from the relatively shabby dressing room.
