Oprah Winfrey The crowd was electrified when Democratic lawmakers made a surprise appearance and expressed their enthusiastic support for Harris.
“We’re so excited right now, we want to get out here and do something,” she said. “And that’s to elect Kamala Haria as the next president of the United States.”
Winfrey warned against politicians who seek to divide the country and spread a message of fear, but encouraged Americans to stand together and unite.
“When we come together, it is impossible to conquer us,” she said.
Speaking about the ongoing effort to protect freedom, Winfrey quoted civil rights activist and Democratic representative from Georgia, John Lewis:
“When a house is on fire, we don’t ask about the race of the homeowner or their religion. We don’t ask who their partner is or how they voted. No. We just try to save them,” she said. “And if that house happens to belong to a cat lady who doesn’t have children, we try to get the cat out, too.”
Winfrey’s comments were a reference to 2021 Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance’s televised remarks that the country was run by “a bunch of childless cat ladies.”
The iconic talk show host accused Trump of using “old tricks and metaphors” to distract Americans.
“But we’re beyond the outrageous tweets and the lies and the stupidity,” she said. “These are complex times and we need to have mature conversations.”
Winfrey’s speech stirred emotions among convention attendees, and cameras captured delegates wiping away tears and chanting “USA.”
“Soon, very soon, we will be teaching our daughters and sons about this child, born of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, two idealistic immigrants, this immigrant, this child, how he grew up to become the 47th president of the United States,” she said. “That’s the best of America.”
Winfrey countered Trump’s comments about the election to show the importance of voting, and appealed directly to independents and undecided voters: “You know what I’m saying is that values and character are more important than anything in leadership and in life.”
She said common sense, as well as “decency and respect,” were important factors in voting in November.
“We are Americans. Let us choose loyalty to the Constitution over loyalty to the individual, because that’s what America is best. Let us choose optimism over cynicism, because that’s what America is best. Let us choose inclusion over retaliation. Let us choose common sense over nonsense, because that’s what America is best. Let us choose the sweet promise of tomorrow over the bitter return to yesterday,” she said.
Winfrey continued: “We are not going back. We are not going to be pushed back, bullied, or held back. We are not going back. Let’s choose truth, let’s choose honor, let’s choose joy, because that’s what’s best in America.”
She concluded her speech by urging voters to elect Harris as the next president in November.
