TikTok went offline in the United States hours before a new law banning the platform took effect.
The app for US users displayed a message saying that a law had been enacted to ban TikTok. This means “TikTok is not available right now.”
“We are fortunate that President Trump has stated that he will work with us on a solution to restore TikTok once he takes office,” it reads.
It comes after the outgoing Biden administration warned social media platforms would “go dark” on Sunday unless they guaranteed the ban would not be enforced.
President-elect Donald Trump said Monday it is “likely” he will suspend the ban on TikTok for 90 days when he takes office.
Users have reported that the app has been removed from both Apple and Google’s US app stores and that their videos are not showing up on TikTok.com.
“A 90-day extension is the most likely thing that will happen because it is appropriate,” Trump said. Saturday on NBC News.
“If we decide to do that, we’ll probably announce it on Monday.”
The White House said it would be up to the next administration to take action.
“We see no reason for TikTok or any other company to take action just days before the Trump administration takes office on Monday,” spokeswoman Carine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.
The Supreme Court on Friday upheld a law passed last April that would have banned the app in the United States unless its China-based parent company, ByteDance, sold the platform by Sunday.
TikTok argued that the law violates the freedom of expression of the country’s 170 million users.
After the ruling, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew appealed to Trump, thanking him for his “commitment to work with us to find a solution.”
Mr. Chu is expected to attend President Trump’s inauguration ceremony on Monday.

Another user, Erika Thompson, said the platform’s educational content would be the “biggest loss” to the community.
TikTok users received a message on Saturday morning that read, “Due to the law, our service will be temporarily unavailable. We are working to restore service in the United States as quickly as possible.”
