Thousands of people protested against the new law outside the Georgian parliament in Tbilisi. Many saw this as a crackdown on civil society in the former Soviet state.
Protesters are trying to stop lawmakers from adopting the so-called “Russian law.” They see this as similar to the laws the Kremlin has used to silence critics.
The Transparency of Foreign Influence Act would force non-governmental organizations and media outlets to register as “organizations serving the interests of foreign powers” if more than 20% of their funding comes from abroad.
The ruling Georgia Dream party said the bill would increase transparency and protect Georgia’s sovereignty.
For several weeks, large rallies have been held in Tbilisi against the “Russian law”.
