I am of two minds about the entire lecture with this title. Chelsea are practically in contention for the title. Because if you look at the league table, at the time of writing (Sunday morning) Chelsea are second in the league, only five points behind Liverpool. A win over Brentford would reduce that to just one tonight.
But in reality it is different. Some vulnerabilities can still be seen, mainly at the back. And there will be a lot of tough games and banana skins. It’s still going to be very up and down, there’s a long way to go. We should expect it.
But when I look at how the teams around Chelsea are performing at the moment, I ask a simple question: What better opportunity to challenge for the Premier League title than this season? And I’m not just asking that of Chelsea, I’m asking that of any club currently in the top six or eight. Because it’s so tight there.
Even Liverpool are out of sight right now and more than capable of beating them. Arsenal are struggling and we can all see what is happening at Manchester City. These three should have been clear title contenders away from the others, but they weren’t, so this is a huge opportunity. We can definitely make the most of it.
But it’s a really difficult situation. Because none of us want to get carried away and see the reality. But at the same time, we don’t know if we’ll ever see this kind of madness again and how open this league is right now. .
Yesterday Liverpool drew with Fulham and Arsenal faced Everton. This is now a huge opportunity for Chelsea to improve. The ball is very much in our court, and what we do with it is up to us.
Remember how we kept pointing to Arsenal as an example of a club needing time on our project? Well, they are now in decline…
Arsenal’s Premier League points tally was taken after 16 games over the last three seasons.
2022/23: 43 points
2023/24: 39 points
2024/25: 30 points
Is it Chelsea’s time to shine? The league is almost begging for clubs to step up and take the reigns. This is where you can literally take it.
Maybe it’s too early in the season for Chelsea, but the facts are here. I hate having to write these types of articles on game day before the game starts because I don’t know how the game will go today. Brentford are a bit of an elusive team for us, but the way we fair tonight could elevate us to a level where everyone would truly call us a true title challenger, or we could humble ourselves a bit.
Either way, it’s an opportunity for a team to make the most of another club’s downfall. Having said that, I would never discount Manchester City or the mindset of the club managed by Pep Guardiola. And I expect Arsenal to improve again too.
