If you’re looking to buy a new controller, you’re in luck. Microsoft’s Xbox Elite Series 2 Core Controller is on sale for $98, down from $130, at Amazon and Target. This means you’ll save about $3 off the current lowest price. This is a good opportunity to upgrade to a better product.
We’ve previously recommended the Xbox Elite Series 2 Core Controller, based primarily on its ability to deliver the best performance of the $180 Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller at a more accessible price. This includes fit and finish, such as rubber grips and sturdier, longer-lasting versions of the existing controller’s triggers, joysticks, and directional pads (which are now circular). Plus, it boasts a battery life of up to 40 hours.

Elite Series 2 Core lets you adjust the tension of the joystick and triggers to your preference, and remap controller buttons in the Xbox Accessories app. This is useful if you have specific settings you prefer. Aside from the limited color options available for purchase outside of the Xbox Design Lab, the Xbox Elite Series 2 Core Controller’s main drawback is its lack of accessories. The price of a regular Xbox Elite Series 2 controller includes a variety of joysticks, a directional pad, and rear paddles that you can attach to experiment with new setups. This is not included in the Core controller at all. In fact, there’s an awkward divot on the back of the controller where the paddles should attach.
This is a small annoyance in the grand scheme of things, and one that can be solved by purchasing the accessories later when you know you actually need them. Even without the paddles, the Xbox Elite Series 2 Core Controller should be noticeably more enjoyable to use, and that’s really important anyway when you’re trying to get through a very long RPG.
