Former President Trump’s campaign sent a cease-and-desist letter to the re-election campaign of House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good (R-Va.), ordering it to stop producing yard signs and other merchandise implying his support.
The Trump campaign sent the letter on Friday, a senior Trump campaign official confirmed to The Hill. This was sent after Good’s campaign leveraged the former president’s image and name and the president’s past support for candidates to boost his chances of re-election.
“To be clear, neither you nor your campaign has the authority to use President Trump’s name or your campaign’s name to falsely imply support for your candidacy,” attorney David Warrington said in the letter obtained by The Hill. “Neither you nor your campaign is authorized. Claiming that you represent or are affiliated with President Trump or the campaign.”
The letter comes just days after President Trump announced his support for Virginia Sen. John McGuire, Good’s primary challenger to win the House seat in the June 18 primary.
“Producing and displaying material that gives the false impression that President Trump supports your candidacy is an act of fraud against voters in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District,” the letter reads, showing a photo of a campaign sign with Trump’s name directly above it. Also included. Goods.
“Making such false statements is an abuse of the voters’ trust,” Warrington added. “Furthermore, if you use President Trump’s name, image or likeness in your fundraising materials to imply that he supports your campaign, this is fraud on donors.”
Trump endorsed McGuire on TruthSocial on Tuesday, citing Good’s past support of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis during the 2024 Republican presidential primary.
After DeSantis withdrew from the race, the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus shifted to supporting Trump, vowing to vote for him in the November general election.
“Bob Good is bad for Virginia and bad for America,” President Trump said. “He turned his back on our amazing movement and continued to attack and fight with me until recently, when he gave me warm, ‘loving’ support. But actually it was too late. The damage has been done!”
The Virginia Republican Party’s website lists endorsements from other lawmakers, including Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), but makes no mention of the former president’s endorsement.
Good showed his support for Trump when he traveled to New York in mid-May to offer support at a Manhattan courthouse. The former president was ultimately found guilty on all 34 charges in his secret case on Thursday.
The Hill has reached out to Good’s campaign for comment.
