Actor Jim Carrey has revealed that he may return to play Dr. Robotnik in a future Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
Carrey has appeared as the main villain in all three Sonic movies, but has said in the past that she never felt pressured to take on a movie role she didn’t personally care about.
The latest film, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, also ends on an ambiguous note about Carrey’s Robotnik. However, in an interview with Japanese YouTube channel Cinema Today, the actor suggested that he would be willing to return for a potential Sonic 4.
“I’m definitely open to it,” he said. “I’m open to the idea and usually they come to me with the next idea. If I go and say, ‘It’ll be fun,’ I will do that. I don’t get caught up in anything in life unless it’s something that interests me.
He added: “I definitely love this crew, I love this gang that makes this movie, and I love the fans. There’s a lot of really good energy around us, the response is great, and the fans are jumping up and down and saying, ‘Why don’t we do this?’ They were very helpful. I think we’re all making this movie together.”
Since its debut last week, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has grossed approximately $210 million worldwide, according to Deadline. To become the highest-grossing installment in the series, it would have to surpass the last film’s $405 million.
Paramount Pictures has reportedly greenlit a fourth Sonic the Hedgehog movie. According to Variety, Sonic 4 is in the planning stages and is expected to release in spring 2027.
All three Sonic movies were directed by Jeff Fowler, with Jim Carrey as Dr. Starring Robotnik and Ben Schwartz as Sonic.
In an interview with VGC last year, Sega’s president of transmedia, Justin Scarpone, said he had big ambitions for Sega’s future as an entertainment company and that he planned to open an official Sega store in Tokyo, Japan.
