The Sims movie has been stuck in development hell for years, but it looks like production may finally begin soon. Amazon MGM is officially producing the film with production company LuckyChap Entertainment, which will be produced by Barbie’s Margot Robbie and directed by Loki director Kate Herron.
LuckyChap Entertainment, run by Robbie, Tom Ackerley, Sophia Kerr, and Josie McNamara, first broke the news earlier this year that the long-rumored The Sims movie was coming back from the dead. Per Puck, movie stakeholders teamed up with Amazon MGM in a bidding war. Netflix offered a larger bid, but producers prefer a theatrical release before the film is streamed.
Given the life-simulation nature of The Sims, it’s unclear how exactly the movie will adapt this property. Fans have speculated that the plot could revolve around the Goth family (pre-made Sims who appear in almost every entry in the series), especially the mysterious disappearance of Bella Goth, which remains controversial among fans of the series.
As with many big video game properties, studios have been threatening to make a live-action The Sims movie for quite some time. Initial reports to this effect first surfaced in 2007. With the success of the Super Mario Bros. movie, it seems more likely that a project like this will be greenlit.
