Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho was left out of the match-day squad against Manchester City last month for his dissent against manager Ruben Amorim.
Manchester United came from behind to win against City at the Etihad thanks to late goals from Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo.
However, much of the post-match coverage axed Garnacho and Marcus Rashford in the match-day squad.
After the final whistle, Amorim told reporters that the pair were left out for failing to meet his high standards in several areas, including their choice of attire, how they relate to their teammates and their form on the pitch.
Garnacho returned to the squad for the next match, the Carabao Cup quarter-final at Tottenham Hotspur. Meanwhile, Rashford was left off the roster for the next four consecutive games. The England international recently returned to action against Newcastle but was an unused substitute as United lost 2-0 at Old Trafford.
Now The Daily Mail’s Chris Wheeler has revealed exactly why Garnacho was snubbed by Amorim for the Manchester derby.
According to Wheeler, “Alejandro Garnacho has been left out of the Manchester United squad due to his dissatisfaction with manager Ruben Amorim, it has been revealed.”
“Mail Sports understands the Argentine winger appeared to have turned his back on Amorim and left, with the Manchester United manager giving him instructions from the touchline ahead of their Europa League clash with Viktoria Plzeň three days before the derby.”
“The 20-year-old’s representative denied that it was rude behavior and created a misunderstanding.”
Wheeler added: “United declined to comment but sources insisted there was no rift between the pair and Garnacho was not frozen out.” But they acknowledged that Amorim has set strict standards for players since the takeover.”
The report also notes that Garnacho’s role and status has declined since Amorim joined, raising doubts about his long-term future at United.
In the last few games, the Argentina international has had to be content to sit on the bench for the most part. Amorim showed a preference for placing Bruno Fernandez in the left number 10 position rather than Garnacho.
Even Joshua Zirkzee, who suffered a humiliating sending off after just 33 minutes against Newcastle, was selected ahead of Garnacho.
