On Thursday night, the Miami Dolphins faced the Buffalo Bills at home in Week 2. Miami narrowly won in the final seconds against the Jaguars in Week 1. Starting QB Tua Tagovailoa was 23-of-37 for 338 yards and one passing touchdown in the 20-17 victory.
In Week 2 against the Bills, Tagovailoa didn’t live up to his potential. The 26-year-old QB was 17-of-25 passing for 145 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions, including a pick-six. Most seriously, Tagovailoa suffered a concussion in the third quarter, forcing him out of the game. Concussions are a serious problem Tua has had to deal with as a professional. There’s a chance he’ll miss some time, which is why head coach Mike McDaniel said the team will use Skylar Thompson as the QB. McDaniel said the team will consider adding another QB.
Until more news comes out about Tua Tagovailoa, Skylar Thompson is Miami’s starting QB.
#dolphin Coach Mike McDaniel said the team would like to bring in Skylar Thompson, but will likely sign a quarterback for depth.
As for Tua Tagovailoa, “The best I can do is not to evaluate what this means from a football perspective,” he said. “The timeline is unsettling,” he added.

With the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins selected QB Tua Tagovailoa from Alabama. He played in 55 games for Miami, starting 53 of them. The 26-year-old went 33-20 in those 53 games, including a Week 2 loss to the Bills. However, Tagovailoa was unable to finish the game due to a concussion. In the third quarter, the QB came out of the pocket and scrambled for a first down. Tua took a big hit because he went head first instead of sliding feet first.
He immediately got down on the ground and assumed what is commonly known as the “fencing position,” which is what happens when someone experiences an acceleration/deceleration injury to the brain. That’s what happened to Tua on Thursday night, and it’s not the first time we’ve seen it from him. Tagovailoa has suffered two major concussions in 2022, the last of which cut his 2022 season short. Tagovailoa has a serious decision to make about whether to continue playing in the NFL. For now, the team will move forward with QB Skylar Thompson, a 2022 seventh-round pick out of Kansas State. Thompson has started two postseason games and one playoff game for the Dolphins. Miami has some tough decisions to make in the coming weeks.
