There have been several remakes of the Resident Evil games over the years, but for anyone looking to experience the franchise in its original low-polygon glory, the classic game is back as part of a joint effort between Capcom and GOG. The first Resident Evil is currently available for purchase through GOG, with Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis set to follow soon after. If you purchase a bundle that includes all three, you’ll save 17% overall and can get it for just $25.
Like other GOG releases, all of these games are DRM-free versions of the survival horror games, upgraded with quality of life improvements and enhanced compatibility with modern PCs. GOG says this version of Resident Evil is uncut and contains more blood, graphic violence, and gore than the PlayStation original.
Speaking with Suzi “SphereHunter” Hunterr, GOG detailed some of the challenges that came with reviving the classic Resident Evil game. Technical issues and bugs had to be addressed to meet Capcom’s high standards, and GOG submitted dozens of builds for approval before the QA process was complete. Some of the improvements to the game include improved DirectX rendering, new rendering options, and full support for modern controllers.
Other changes focus on improving the timing of cutscenes, improving the game save manager, and the option to switch between the game’s various localizations. Reports of a Resident Evil re-release picked up steam last week when the game’s age rating was discovered online, making this GOG version the first time Resident Evil has been available digitally on PC.
Meanwhile, Resident Evil Zero is reportedly one of two remakes in development, while rumors about the yet-to-be-announced Resident Evil 9 claim it could be an open-world game.
