Tencent has confirmed that Sharkmob London has been fired.
According to a report by PocketGamer, the studio has suffered a “headcount reduction.”
“Like many studios, Sharkmob has been affected by difficult conditions in the video game market,” Tencent said in a statement.
“As a result, Sharkmob has regrettably had to reduce headcount in its London office. Tencent is committed to the launch of Sharkmob and our upcoming game Exoborne.”
Last month, GamesIndustry.biz reported that the studio was struggling after canceling one of its projects in development.
The studio announced the publication of the news in a statement, and the London team has now entered a consultation period to assess how much headcount reduction is needed.
Sharkmob said at the time that it aimed to “try to minimize this impact.”
“As you know, our industry is facing challenges. This means that as a business we have to adapt to focus on the right opportunities,” he said after initial news broke that layoffs were planned.
“Our team in London has been developing an unannounced game for some time and we regret to announce that this project has now been cancelled.
“Unfortunately the decision to cancel the game means the number of people we can support at our London studio will be reduced. “These are incredibly difficult times and our focus is to provide support and guidance to those potentially affected.”
