Telegram today announced the launch of a new feature that will allow official third-party services to assign additional verification icons to user accounts and chats. The added verification is intended to reduce fraud and reduce misinformation.
Telegram already has a verification process for public figures and organizations, but trusted third-party services may provide additional verification options. Chats or accounts with third-party verification will have a small logo in front of their name, and when you open their associated profile, you’ll see a detailed explanation of the account status and what it means.
Third-party verification is separate from the verified checkmarks that Telegram provides to public figures and organizations. Services that wish to provide third-party authentication to others must first obtain authentication through Telegram and then complete the application.
According to Telegram, third-party authentication makes it easier for users to independently verify who they are contacting and which services they are interacting with.
Along with new confirmation options, Telegram has added support for collectible gifts, reactions to service messages, additional message search filters, and more.
Telegram said the first major update of 2025 was actually scheduled to come out on the last day of 2024, but was “sadly delayed due to a lack of interest from Apple’s review team.”
