Apple has now launched its Tap to Pay service on iPhone in Egypt and Chile, bringing the total number of countries to 20 to receive the feature since its launch in 2022.
Following its launch in the United Arab Emirates, Tap to Pay on iPhone is now available in Chile and Egypt. The latter was confirmed by: egypt todayThis means that Apple initially partnered with three major banks in the country.
The launch is also said to have been made possible thanks to the Central Bank of Egypt’s (CBE) approval of new regulations for payment services using electronic devices and apps in 2023.
Tap to Pay on iPhone ultimately means that suppliers and customers can hold their iPhones close to each other and initiate payments. It means merchants don’t have to purchase a separate contactless device, although a payment app is required, as well as support from Apple and local banks.
Tap to Pay on iPhone has been slow to roll out, although Chile, Egypt, and the UAE followed quickly in December 2024. It was first approved in the US Apple Store in May 2022, then spread to the UK in 2023 and Japan in May 2024.
