Namibia’s Ruben Trumpelmann became the first T20 international to take wickets in his first two deliveries as his team beat Oman via a super over in a thrilling T20 World Cup match here. David Wiese and skipper Gerhard Erasmus scored 21 runs for Namibia in the one-over eliminator, with Oman managing 10 from the allotted six deliveries which were superbly bowled by the experienced Wiese. Asked to bat first, Oman had earlier been bowled out for 109 in 19.4 overs at Kensington Oval. In response, Namibia were also stopped on the same team score with Jan Frylinck hitting 45 off 48 balls and Mehran Khan taking 3/7 to force a Super Over.
Trumpelman, the Namibian-born South African left-arm fast bowler, had made history.
The 26-year-old achieved the feat as he dismissed opener Kashyap Prajapati and Oman skipper Aqib Ilyas for a golden duck off the first two balls of the match.
Khalid Kail top-scored for Oman with 34 off 39 balls.
Trumpelmann took another wicket in the second over to return to career-best figures of 4-21.
He trapped Kashyap Prajapati legs in front of the wicket with an inswinging yorker off the first ball of the match and then dismissed Ilyas with a ball that hit the batsman’s toes.
In the process, Trumpelmann also registered the team’s best figure in T20 World Cup history. He broke his previous record of 3/17 against Scotland in the 2021 T20 World Cup in UAE.
After sending back Prajapati and Ilyas off successive balls, Trumpelmann dismissed opener Naseem Khushi and then returned to pick up the wicket of Kalemullah when he was dead for his fourth scalp.
Wiese was also among the wickets, returning good figures of 3/28 from 3.4 overs as Oman found it difficult to deal with the Namibian bowlers.
However, defending the small total, the Oman bowlers showed a lot of discipline and refused to go down without a fight, eventually tying the game.
But on this day, Nambia had the last laugh.
Many thought Namibia captain Erasmus would hand the ball to Trumpelmann to bowl the super over, but he chose 39-year-old Bizet for his years of experience and it paid dividends.
After the tense win, Player of the Match Wiese, also from South Africa, said: “I turned two years older tonight. I don’t have many years left. (Laughs) It was an emotionally draining evening.” ” Speaking about batting and bowling in the Super Over, “It was helpful to have a feel for the game and to know how many hits I could hit in a Super Over…. I felt like I could get the ball and run with it.
“The pitch was difficult and we didn’t play the way we thought we would, but we adapted well. It was two overs and a difficult wicket to get into. We definitely had to give it a bit of time before we could capitalize.” Namibia were in the process of chasing the target of 110 until Mehran Khan (3/7) took Oman back into the contest with two wickets in the final over.
