Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan has received an official reprimand from the ICC for throwing his bat on the ground in frustration after teammate Karim Janat was denied a run during their T20 World Cup Super 8 match against Bangladesh .
The incident occurred in Afghanistan’s final innings, when Rashid lost his cool after Janat was denied a second run to the skipper’s shot.
“Rashid was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel relating to throwing the ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at a player in an improper and dangerous manner during an international match,” the ICC said in a press release.
“In addition, one demerit point has been added to Rashid’s disciplinary record – his first offense in 24 months.” Rashid admitted the offense and accepted the sanction proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC match referees, so no formal hearing was required.
On-field umpires Nitin Menon and Langton Rusere, third umpire Adrian Holdstock and fourth umpire Ahsan Raza were equally responsible.
Level 1 violations will result in a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50% of the player’s match fee, and 1-2 demerit points.
Afghanistan advanced to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup for the first time in an ICC competition after beating Bangladesh by 8 runs via DLS in a rain-affected match.
Afghanistan will face South Africa in the first semi-final in Taruba, Trinidad.
