Sydney’s Olympic Stadium is set to host the 2027 Rugby World Cup final, with Victoria pulled out of the tournament after protesting against the expulsion of the Melbourne Rebels, according to a report by News Corp.
According to anonymous sources, Sydney’s Olympic Stadium, where the 2003 World Cup final was held, will host the final, third place and semi-finals.
News Corp reported Victoria’s “entire tournament was completely suspended after the state government withdrew its bid in futile protest over the decision to remove the Rebels from Super Rugby, which World Rugby is not involved in.”
Former RA chief executive John O’Neill, who oversaw the 2003 tournament, said Sydney was the perfect venue.
“That’s not to say Melbourne isn’t temporarily a sensational sporting destination, but in reality it’s not a natural location for the Rugby World Cup,” O’Neill told News Corp.
“History and tribalism are overwhelmingly attractive as they strongly promote Sydney as an events and rugby mecca.”
Perth’s Optus Stadium is considered a favorite to host the opener on October 1, two days before the NRL grand final.
Brisbane’s 52,000-seat Suncorp Stadium has hosted many marquee Wallabies matches but will host the quarter-finals, although it is deemed too small for a semi-final or opening match.
Adelaide, Townsville and Newcastle have secured key pool fixtures, while Sydney will be the only city with a second stadium, with Allianz Stadium also included on the list.
